It wasn't the desired result, but Sandwich wrapped up its season wrestling well.

The Indians did not qualify any wrestlers for state from the Class 2A Sycamore Sectional on Saturday. Sandwich's Jackson and Wyatt Murphy both came a match away from qualifying. Indians' coach Josh McCarty was overall pleased with how his guys wrestled.

"I was impressed with how the kids came out ready to wrestle and were focused," McCarty said. "Sometimes you go into sectionals, you get nervous or don't perform, or maybe two kids do really well and the other kids don't do well. Overall, it's one of the best performances I've seen."

Jackson Murphy (24-11) at 152 pounds went 3-2, losing by technical fall to Rochelle's Ehren Metzger in the consolation semifinal. At 182 Wyatt Murphy also went 3-2, dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to Dixon's Clint Schielein in the consolation semifinal.

"Both those guys showed a lot of grit," McCarty said. "I told them they need to remember this. Use that disappoinment as motivation to distance yourself from those kids."

Cael Schindlbeck won one match at 120, and at 138 Jacob Newberry avenged losses at conference and regionals to Plano's Connor Kensel with an 18-4 major decision.

Zach Reyes at 170 pounds went 2-2.

"Zach had a good season for us," McCarty said. "He had a shoulder injury at regionals and only wrestled one day of practice before sectionals. I thought he came out and performed, lost to a really good LaSalle-Peru kid."

All and all, it was a good season for Sandwich. The Indians went 15-4 in duals, and didn't drop a dual after Christmas. They took second at the Amboy Tournament and second at regionals.

"With the kids we have returning we're set up for a good future," McCarty said. "We talked about changing the culture of the program, the kids really wanted to change that, and you could tell with their work ethic in practice."
