Letter: Good, evil not so easy

To the Editor:

Bill Shink claims, in his letter in the Feb. 28 Ledger, that there are “three inarguable facts... 1) good people exist, 2) evil people exist, and 3) hundreds of millions of guns exist.”

I would argue that dividing humanity up into good and evil sectors is not so easy. According to the allegedly dominant religion of this country, to which I subscribe, the human heart is both good and evil in turns, and evil is lurking in each of us. We don’t always have charitable thoughts towards each other. Even Jesus said to someone who called him “Good Teacher” – “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.”

Mr. Shink defines good people as the law-abiding. That might be a rather low standard as there are many “law-abiding” people we might hesitate to call good. Mr. Shink’s implication, that to be a really good citizen and take on the burden of protecting ourselves and our fellow citizens from evil, we maybe should go buy an AR-15 ourselves, is ridiculous.
