New food pantry board sues father of former director

Crowley accused along with director's husband of stealing funds

The leadership of the Kendall County Community Food Pantry, which replaced the old food pantry board in 2016, has filed a civil lawsuit in Kendall County court accusing the former director’s father-in-law of stealing funds while his daughter and son-in-law worked at the pantry.

William Crowley of Arizona is already facing criminal charges of theft allegedly conducted while his daughter, Maria Spaeth, was director of the pantry and her husband, Kenneth Spaeth, was treasurer.

Kenneth Spaeth also faced criminal charges, but pleaded guilty as part of a plea agreement on Monday, March 12.

Maria Spaeth died in June of 2016 of a prescription drug overdose only weeks after Yorkville police executed a search warrant on the pantry. The couple had resigned from their posts at the pantry shortly after the police search.

The civil lawsuit, filed on Feb. 28 by the Kendall County Community Food Pantry, accuses Crowley of using a food pantry credit card to make personal purchases, totaling $24,580.42, beginning around September of 2012.

The alleged expenses are outlined in the lawsuit, and include receipts totalling $587.45 for dining at Lakeview Grille in Yorkville, $249.99 at American Mattress, $753.99 at HH Gregg, $1,054.09 and $1,838.79 at Home Depot, and $955.34 at Chignoli Auto.

The lawsuit accuses Crowley of civil theft, unjust enrichment and civil conspiracy, and seeks the amount charged by Crowley as restitution.
