Sandwich board learns about PaCE program

Encouraging students to plan for their futures and providing tools so they can make informed decisions is part of the PaCE program being offered at Sandwich High School.

Sandwich High School Principal Tom Sodaro described the Postsecondary and Career Expectations (PaCE) framework at a recent school board meeting. The program focuses on having the school support career and college exploration, preparation, selection, financial aid and literacy.

The entire student body is being urged to select one or two career clusters from a group of 16 clusters, such as health sciences, plumbing and finance.  Each of the clusters has from two to nine jobs listed. Visiting colleges, universities, work places and working in the field are encouraged by the school.

According to PaCE, it’s the school district’s responsibility to provide tools for the students to make informed decisions about their future after high school. It also needs to start teaching tools early in students’ formal education and to understand trends in careers to help them make educated decisions.

The school district also plans on starting in middle school, using a program called XELLo, to help students consider their future goals, to build portfolios and take time for self-reflection.

It even starts in kindergarten with P-20 Network, when there are often “Bring Your Child To Work” days, Sodaro concluded.
