SANDWICH – A video program titled “Wonderful World of Woodbury” was shown at a recent Sandwich School District 430 board meeting, describing the staff’s efforts to build a culture and climate for learning at Woodbury Elementary School.
There are 181 children in kindergarten through third grades attending Woodbury School, the smallest of the three elementary schools in the district.
Principal Jennifer Kern and the teachers first showed the “wrong” way to behave in the videos, such as running in halls, swinging on doors in the restroom and pulling paper displays off the walls. Then the “Woodbury Way” was shown, where the children are “safe, kind and responsible,” a motto used repeatedly.
The staff and students were shown using techniques they’ve learned to calm themselves, with those at the meeting viewing students in a kindergarten class sitting quietly at tables for 30 seconds.
Some of them reaching one arm in front of them, then bringing their hands down slowly, from their foreheads to their waists.
One “responsibility” example given was, “If a child makes a mess while in the cafeteria, then the student must help the custodian, Mr. Kurtz, clean the cafeteria.”
The schoolwide theme for 2017-18 was “Always Choose Kind.” The 2018-19 theme is “You Are a Rainbow of Possibilities.” The themes are used on T-shirts, posters and displays throughout the school to highlight the Woodbury Way.
The officials explained that “We want to create a school where students, staff and parents are beating down the doors to get in... not out.”
