To the Editor:
You have to be impressed with the tone and substance of Lauren Underwood's campaign materials. In this age of hateful campaign ads, defamatory attacks, and fear mongering, based on half-truths and outright lies, her materials are straight forward and factual. Lauren has campaigned on the important issues, particularly affordable health care. Her experience and education are outstanding. Every voter should go online and review her qualifications at http://umderwoodforcongress.com. You will be very favorably impressed.
Attack ads work. That is why they are used. Experience show they often work not because they are so persuasive to undecided voters, or energize a candidate's base, but because they tend to demoralize and neutralize the opponent's supporters and undecided voters. These ads also provide simplistic answers to people who do not take the time or trouble to secure the facts. The result is often attack ads generate negativity toward the whole election process and politicians. It is no surprise that voter turnout for elections is so poor and getting worse. The people that use negative ads put party loyalty and special interests ahead of the public good.
Now, Randy Hultgren backers have started using attack ads. They falsely claim Lauren was moved into the 14th congressional district just to run for Congress, and even question her nursing credentials. They must be getting scared. We should not allow ourselves to be manipulated by dirty politics and personal, deceitful campaign attacks Regardless of the results of this election, the real "losers" are the candidates who use these strategies. Let's stick to issues and seek out the facts. Our democracy depends on it.
