Yorkville Christian High School students from Mr. Vester’s Mass Communication and Media Writing classes visited WERV 95.9 “the River” in Aurora as part of their ongoing coursework in the area of media studies. Students were able to see the engineering hub of the station, met with the sales and promotion staff and talked about advertisement, creating commercials and creating events that connect the community. Then students moved to the production and on-air area where they met with radio personalities that included morning hosts Scott McKay and Danielle Tofano. Vester’s class is currently focusing on the history and development of radio which includes the pioneers of radio, the power of radio as a medium historically, and the changes that radio has gone through in this digital age. The Media Writing class has been entrenched in an ongoing series of exercises and special projects in writing for news, writing for podcasts and writing promotional material for audio, video, and print that draws in an audience. The overarching message in both classes is that as future communicators, it is incumbent upon them to not only find effective ways to reach audiences and convey a clear message, but do so in an ethical way that puts facts before fanfare.
