Kayla Schiera is the one local athlete with Saturday experience at the state finals.
The Sandwich senior — bound for Southern Illinois University-Carbondale — was fourth and fifth, respectively, last year in the 3,200 and 1,600 runs.
Schiera coasted to the 3,200 title by almost 70 seconds to win in 11:19.89.
But LaSalle-Peru senior Rachel Hickey—who had the fastest 800 time regardless of class in the regular season—denied Schiera a second title in the metric mile, 5:19.11-5:21.95.
“The two-mile I felt confident,” Schiera said. “It was my first event, so I had a lot of energy. The 1,600 could have been a little better, but it’s not my race. It would mean the world to me to get back to Saturday [at state in the 1,600].”
