The Yorkville American Legion Auxiliary Unit 489 recently announced the winners of its 2018 Gold Star Member Scholarship.
Haley Middendorf, a 2018 Yorkville High School graduate, was awarded the scholarship in the graduating high school senior category. She has been a member of several organizations, including Girl Scouts, Yorkville Youth Tackle Football Cheerleading coach, National Honors Society, Student Council and Mathworks Math Modeling Challenge, as well as being very active with her church.
Middendorf plans to attend the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. She is the daughter of Wayland and Michelle Middendorf of Yorkville.
Carlie Bakel, currently a student at Waubonsee Community College, was awarded the scholarship in the current college student category. She is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success (Sigma Alpha Pi), Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, TRIO, the Society for Collegiate Leadership and Achievement, and the Engaging Leaders Program.
Bakel is pursing a degree in education to become a special education teacher. She is the daughter of Sean and Cara Bakel of Yorkville.
