Lighting is one of the most important elements of your home’s design. It not only provides the obvious benefits of safety and illumination for household tasks. Just as important, it helps create the room atmosphere and design you want.
The one problem with traditional lighting is that it isn’t mobile. A lamp needs a table or shelf, and ceiling light fixtures are where they are.
Enter track, or rail, lighting, which is usually mounted on a ceiling or wall with adjustable spotlight heads on a bar or rail. It can be positioned on a ceiling or wall and “aimed” at features and areas that need light for enhancement.
“This allows light to be focused where it is needed most in an area,” said Eric Schaefer, manager of one of two Light Source Lighting locations serving the area. “It can be used to highlight stone on a fireplace, pictures on a wall, kitchen work areas or desks and bookcases.”
He said customers have found it useful in kitchens, family rooms, offices and bathrooms. But the advantage is that is can be used anywhere. Lights mounted along the rail can be directed at features the homeowner wants to enhance.
Rail lighting also becomes part of the décor scheme, thanks to the sizes, types of lighting and fixtures.
There are many styles to choose from; rustic and farmhouse, modern, transitional or traditional. Some rail lighting has regular sockets, halogen or integrated LED.
“Mostly it comes down to the style and application to determine the right fixture,” Schaefer said.
